I’m pleased we’ve been able to open at least nine holes and get the season underway. I understand that conditions on the greens haven’t been ideal, but given the weather we’ve had, this is the best that could be achieved.
We’ve continued to experience very cold nights, with frost on Sunday and Monday morning, and just 2°C at the time of writing today.
I’d like to address a common misconception: while snow melted early this year, that doesn’t necessarily mean an early start to the golf season. Almost everything depends on soil temperature—not just air temperature. Following the snow melt, we endured 3–4 weeks of consistently freezing nights, with lows between -4°C and -10°C, right up through Easter. It remained cold well into April. While the protective sheets on the greens help guard against frost, they can only raise surface temperatures by a few degrees.
Although most greens survived the winter well, we’ve seen significant stress in low-lying areas where meltwater accumulated. These areas suffered major setbacks during the extended cold spell, and unfortunately, there’s little that could be done to prevent that.
Many of the greens still need more time to establish strong, healthy turf before they’re ready for regular play. The decision to delay the opening of the front nine is clear when looking at the damage. Initially, our winter recovery efforts worked well—the seeded areas began responding nicely under the green covers. But prolonged cold nights and chilly winds halted that progress.
The seed has germinated, but it’s not establishing properly in these low temperatures. Nighttime warmth is essential for soil to heat up and support root development and growth. As a result, we’ve decided to re-cover greens 2 and 8, in addition to 7 and 11, which were already protected. These covers need to stay on as long as possible to give the grass every chance to establish and withstand play.
Unfortunately, this means the full 18 holes won’t open until Tuesday, 13th May at the earliest. Even then, I can’t guarantee all greens will be playable—some temporary greens may still be needed for a few more days. I’ll assess conditions closer to the time and update you accordingly.
The forecast looks more favourable this weekend and into next week. Let’s hope that holds true so we can finally see some consistent growth and continued recovery.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
