The removal of snow and ice was very successful again this year! Most of the greens have come through the winter in great condition, with the exception of greens 7 and 11.
We covered the greens as soon as possible several weeks ago to provide them with maximum protection. However, over the past three weeks, we’ve experienced extremely cold nights, with temperatures dropping as low as -8°C as recently as a week ago. Unfortunately, this has delayed recovery slightly. While no further damage has occurred, the greens have remained very cold, and some were still frozen just a few days ago.
This week’s warmer weather has been a welcome change, and we are beginning to see the first signs of recovery and new growth. We have started up the watering system to provide much-needed hydration and are preparing for fertilization and the first cut sometime next week.
As always, opening for the season depends on the weather and temperature. It’s easy to forget that we’ve only just finished March. This time last year, we still had full snow coverage, which, in some ways, can be better than enduring weeks of freezing nights and cold winds, as we have this year.
That said, I remain optimistic about a good start to the season. However, we won’t be opening the course until conditions are just right and we have the necessary warmth for healthy grass growth and recovery.
I am looking forward to this season and will provide a new update in a few weeks time
Thanks
